Taylor Marsh: Obama to McCain: ‘You were wrong.’

by Taylor Marsh

From the start of the debate McCain wouldn’t meet Obama’s eye. At the end of it that hadn’t changed, even as Obama gave McCain his due time and again, which the McCain camp has already turned into a video. It was the difference of someone being small, compared to someone revealing his confidence, while showing presidential temperament. On that alone Obama “won” hands down.

House debate, vote on Iraq war set for next week / Top Dems crafting
Article:House debate, vote on Iraq war set for next week / Top :/c/a/2007 that the Senate is soon to leave on a weeklong recess without voting on the war.

Hillary Clinton weighs in:

“tonight barack obama displayed beyond a doubt that he understands both the momentousness of the financial crisis facing america, and the challenges we go up against in iraq and around the world. senator mccain offered only more of the unchanged failed policies of the bush administration. america deserves better.

“I stood next to Barack Obama in 22 debates and tonight epitomized why millions are joining me in standing with him and working hard to ensure he is the next President of the United States.”

Obama’s goal tonight was to simply become an equal to the “legendary” foreign policy man John McCain. He accomplished that, while showing unending patience with his opponent who continually displayed the politics of condecension, bordering on petulance that is unbecoming of anyone at this level of political prowess. I can’t imagine independents appreciated McCain’s sniping, and I bet they also saw that he was about to pop about half of the time.

McCain needed a win, in my opinion. This was his issue night. He didn’t get it.

Obama needed to stay even with the “legendary foreign policy expert.” He did that and more, while remaining unruffled throughout.

McCain didn’t get the knock out he needed. Obama held his own and showed the right stuff. Plus, McCain looks like yesterday. Obama represents the future. Good night for our side.

As for the reviews, Obama gets the nod:

Washington Post: Fact Check- McCain seriously misstated his vote concerning the marines in Lebanon viagra. He said that when he went into Congress in 1983, he voted against deploying them in Beirut. The Marines went in Lebanon in 1982, before McCain came to Congress. The vote came up a year into their deployment, when the Marines had already suffered 54 casualties. What McCain voted against was a measure to invoke the War Powers Act and to authorize the deployment of U.S. Marines in Lebanon for an additional 18 months. The measure passed 270-161, with 26 other Republicans (including McCain) and 134 Democrats voting against it.

Washington Post: Fact Checker- John McCain raised an old Republican canard, repeated often in the primaries, when he claimed that Obama’s health care plan would eventually turn the health care system over to the federal government. The Illinois senator proposes helping individuals purchase health insurance through a system of subsidies and tax credits. He is also in favor of mandatory health insurance for children. But he is not advocating a state-run health system, such as the one that exists in Britain and some European countries.

New Republic (Jonathan Cohn) Obama Tells It Like It Is on Economics - Obama just gave a terrific, honest explanation of his economic agenda.

Cloud Computing is Hyped and Overblown, Forrester’s Frank Gillett…..Big Tech Companies Have “Cloud Envy”

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — While cloud computing is bringing enormous power to large and small organizations, the hype around the trend is “over blown.” says Forrester VP and Principal Analyst Frank Gillett. I interviewed him on Wednesday afternoon on the MIT campus.

Legislative branch

He told me that the whole movement has lead to “cloud envy” with companies branding existing services by “cloud washing” — using “cloud spray,” he says.

Earlier this month he published a report on the subject.

Seems like Oracle CEO Larry Ellison is one of big skeptics over the cloud gazing, as Dan Farber over at CNET News.com writes tonight. Dan moderated a panel on cloud computing earlier this week at Technology Review EmTech conference.

Virgin Comics gives it up, Liquid Comics hopes for a splash

Virgin Comics is dead and gone, and a new venture called Liquid Comics is picking up the pieces.

If you go to the Virgin Comics website, you will see that the new name is already up and running. This is the news that Virgin editor-in-chief Gotham Chopra was hinting at when I spoke to him a few weeks ago.

Virgin arrived on the scene in 2006 and stirred things up with some big ideas (looking to Asia and India specifically for concepts and audience and also tapping Hollywood talent to create comics that could be used as instant templates for film projects) and big names (Sir Richard Branson and Deepak Chopra on the corporate masthead, and Guy Ritchie, John Woo and Nicolas Cage among its Hollywood creators, along with comics-industry notables such as Garth Ennis, Alex Ross and Mike Carey).

The venture was met with considerable interest and some cynicism (Alan Moore, for instance, took a thinly disguised swipe at Virgin here not long ago and essentially called it everything that was wrong with a Hollywood-obsessed comics industry). The formula certainly grabbed the attention of some Hollywood folks, who had watched the Dark Horse success story and believed that a small but nimble comic-book company could not only be a dynamic Hollywood player, it could in essence publish movie storyboards.

I talked to filmmaker Ritchie about this a year ago and he was intensely interested in the notion of writing a story, realizing it visually on a comic book page and then using that as project pitch and visual guide to a movie. The “Snatch” director told me that “Gamekeeper,” his series for Virgin, became a hot commodity before it was even printed. “The irony,” he said, “is there has been more interest in this from movie studios than anything I ever did before.”

But, in the end, it was money matters in the greater Virgin empire that forced the closure of the comic-book company’s New York offices early this month.

I exchanged e-mails this morning with Gotham Chopra (who is the son of author Deepak) and he told me about some other things coming up that I will be able to share with you soon. Essentially, though, my sense is that he, publisher Sharad Devarajan and their team have lost the corporate backing of Branson’s sprawling Virgin empire (which is grappling with the grim financial realities of the day) but that they were in comic-book business before they had Branson as a partner and they will solider now without the British conglomerate.

The question now is how all this will directly or indirectly affect a number of projects underway (such as the “Ramayan 3392″ video game with Sony, the partnership with the Sci Fi Channel and “Virulents,” the movie property that director John Moore wants to make as his follow-up to “Max Payne”).

Stay tuned …

– Geoff Boucher

Review: My Best Friend’s Girl cialis

you understand what i’m tired of? i’m tired of romantic comedies about people who have unconventional, magical relationship “skills” that they use to make spinach. you had hitch, where will smith knew everything about women and could offer you his expertise. then failure to start had sarah jessica parker being hired by exasperated parents to date their loser sons, boost their self-esteem, and get them out of the bawdy-house. and just last be found wanting there was dane cook as good stroke of luck chuck, whom women would sleep with because they knew it would live them to their soulmates. these movies aren’t all bad, but their cutesy premises have created a unknown cliché in a genre that already had multitudes of them. the latest is another dane cook present, my best friend’s girl, and it’s a misguided blend of frat-little shaver raunchiness (which is why they hired cook) and the usual rom-com tropes (which is why they hired kate hudson as his co-star). yes, chick-flick fans, all your favorite plot points are here — convocation under false pretenses, feeling betrayed when the truth comes elsewhere, declaring your love in the stream, and reconciling in a highly public responsibility — but they’re mixed with testicle jokes and vomiting! cook plays tank turner, a first-class douchebag who, kidney cook himself, takes dignity in his douchebagginess. when he wants to be in the arms of Morpheus with a woman, he decent treats her like low-down. of course, this only attracts the type of women who dig being treated like dirt, but i guess everyone has a specialty. in his spare time, tank accepts long green from enjoy-struck guys who want him to date their ex-girlfriends, show the women a untoward time, and drive them ago into the arms of the guys they dumped. there is a certain intelligence to it: if you want a damsel to think you’re terrific by comparison, hold up her up with tank turner.

Friendster flashbacks as Facebook goes after fakesters [Social Networks]

It seemed like only yesterday that Jonathan Abrams was waging an all-out war against “fakesters,” or made-up public profiles on his social networking startup Friendster — because lord knows, we can’t have people misrepresenting themselves on the Internet. Now it’s Facebook’s turn to play the heavy, with users of the PackRat application getting multiple accounts deleted. Players of the social card game were signing up under pseudonyms in order to give themselves an advantage in the social card game.

Facebook has been notoriously stuck up about making sure users are identified strictly by their government names. Now both heavy users generating an excess of pageviews and an application developer that depends on the company’s “platform” are feeling the wrath from above for sinning against the terms of service. Certainly the “tyrannical, omnipotent” style of divine rule didn’t end up working so well for Friendster — Facebook is popular and growing, but punishing its most devoted acolytes like Job can’t work in the long run.
